Next to a good eye, the important point in good batting, is for the player to have his forward foot and shoulder closer to the line of the pitch than the rear foot and shoulder, as in the illustration on the left. Every good hitter adopts this stance when he goes to the plate. It enables him to step into the ball and to get his weight into the swing. In the illustration on the right the batter has taken the wrong stance. His rear foot and shoulder farthest from the pitcher is nearest to the line of the pitch. He instinctively steps away from the ball and cannot meet it with a well timed swing.
