Washington at New York. Chicago at St Louis. ## ATTACK ON RUSSELL IN SEVENTH SEWS UP GAME By JAMES C. O'LEARY Two out of three was the best the Red Sox could do against the league champions. The Senators won the final game of the series yesterday, 8 to 5\. [Fohl](https://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/fohlle01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com)'s men couldn't do much against the pitching of [Willard Morrell](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrebi01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), a Wayland, Mass, boy, formerly of Tufts, and later with New Haven of the Eastern League, except in one inning, when they bunched three hits with three bases on balls. Lack of control was the only weakness shown by Morrell, and even when at his worst in this respect, his nerve, apparently not shaken, and he went through like a veteran. The Senators introduced another youngster, Dan "Zach" [Taylor](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tayloda01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com), recently obtained in a deal with Buffalo, who is playing his first year in professional baseball, and who was in the Washington lineup for the first time yesterday. Manager [Buck Harris](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harribu01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) put him at the head of the batting order, which looks like the proper place for him. On his second time at bat he knocked the ball deep into the right field bleachers for a home run, and later made two singles. ### "Goose" Has Big Day [Goose Goslin](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gosligo01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) also did some hitting, making a home run and three singles. The Red Sox used four pitchers on the mound and another as a pinch-hitter. Both home runs were made against [Wingfield](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wingfte01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), who started the game, and worked five innings, giving way to a substitute batsman. [Welzer](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/welzeto01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) worked one inning and pitched to only three men. [Russell](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/russeja01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) worked only one-third of an inning, but that was long enough, so that he was charged with the loss of the game, as he started with a tie score and was held responsible for the two runs made by the Senators in the seventh. [Zahniser](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zahnipa01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) finished up, and [Heimach](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heimafr01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), another pitcher, went to bat for him in the ninth and gave [Joe Judge](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/judgejo01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) an opportunity to turn in the fielding feature of the game, a one-handed catch of a hot liner over the foul line back of first base. [Roger Peckinpaugh](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peckiro01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) was hit on the knee by a ball hot off [Jacobson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jacobba01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com)'s bat in the sixth and spread-eagled in the short field. He was so severely hurt that he had to be assisted to the dressing room. Young [Meyer](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myerbu01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), who replaced him, turned in one sensational fielding stunt on a ball hard hit by Jacobson, which nine times out of ten would have been good for a bingle. ### Two Early Home Runs Goslin's home run in the second and Taylor's similar drive in the third gave the visitors the edge. The Red Sox had a chance in the fourth. [Haney](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haneyfr01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) dropped a Texas leaguer in left which was good for a double, [Todt](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/todtph01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) drew a base on balls, Jacobson flied to Taylor and [Regan](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reganbi01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) to [Rice](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ricesa01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) and [Shaner](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shanewa01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) was hit by a pitched ball, filling the bases. Another pass, this one to [Rigney](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rigneto01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), forced Haney over the plate with the Red Sox' first run. With the bases still full, [Stokes](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stokeal01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), going after a bad ball, hit weakly to Judge for the third out. A single by Taylor, a sacrifice by Harris, a base on balls to Rice, and, after Goslin had flied to [Flagstead](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/flagsir01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), a double by Judge to right, scored Taylor and Rice in the fifth. The Red Sox tied the score in the sixth. Todt led off with a triple to right and scored on Jacobson's single, which laid Peckinpaugh low. Regan flied to Rice and Shaner popped to Myer. Rigney drew a pass, filling the bases. [Rosenthal](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rosensi01.shtml?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), batting in place of Welzer, doubled to right, scoring Jacobson and Rigney. Flagstead walked, again filling the bases, but Haney flied to Rice for the third out. ### Russell Loses Game Russell got away to a bad start in the seventh. He passed Taylor, the first batter to face him. Harris sacrificed, Rice singled, scoring Taylor, and Goslin singled, putting Rice on third, from where, after Zahniser had relieved Russell, he scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Judge. The Red Sox then trailed to the end of the game. He was an expert hockey player at the Wayland High School. While at Tufts he pitched two winning games against Harvard, and in his freshman year he shut out Yale, holding the Elis to three hits. Two of his brothers, Allan and Malcolm, distinguished themselves in athletics at Bowdoin. The home run of Taylor's went deeper into the right-field bleachers than did Goslin's. The whole squad was taken on the road trip by the Red Sox, who started for Philadelphia last night. Cincinnati at Chicago. ## LINDSTROM'S HOMER IN 13TH COSTS TRIBE GAME *Special Dispatch to the Globe* **NEW YORK, June 30**—Manager [Dave Bancroft](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bancrda01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com)'s strategy went wrong at the psychological moment today and it cost the Braves a 15-inning thriller with the Giants, 7 to 6. After one run, that looked sufficient to bag the verdict, had trickled across the plate in the 13th and with himself perched on first base, Banny gave [Dick Burrus](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/burrudi01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) the high sign to attempt a pilfer of third. Banny figured that Jack Scott, on the mound for the Giants, would forget himself and thereby commit a balk that would set the stage for two additional runs. However, Scott refused to be hypnotized by the tricky Banny. The result was that a home run by Freddy Lindstrom inside the lot once more deadlocked the issue and necessitated two additional frames before the margin of victory was manufactured. The Giants chased over the run that gave them an even break in the four-game series when Lindstrom led off with a single and took around to third by [Bob Meusel](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/meusebo01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com)'s single. [George Kelly](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kellyge01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) lashed a sacrifice fly to Welsh, scoring Lindstrom and calling a halt to the overtime combat. The Braves staged a game uphill rally that enabled them to register twice in the ninth inning and pull up on even terms with their opponents. [Joe Genewich](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/genewjo01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) was entrusted with the task of trying to make it three in a row, but proved unequal to the occasion. ### Braves First to Count The Braves got a run in the opening frame when Wilson and Welsh beat out bunts and High singled to right, scoring Wilson. The Giants took command in the third with two runs. Mueller walked and Young was hit by a pitched ball. Lindstrom singled to center, scoring Mueller and sending Young to third. Meusel's sacrifice hoist to Welsh tallied Young. The Braves went out in front with a brace of markers in the fifth. Genewich bounced a hit off Lindstrom's shins, and when Barnes made a wide throw of Gautreau's sacrifice bunt Genewich reached second. Wilson forced Gautreau, Barnes to Jackson, Genewich advancing to third. Welsh forced Wilson, Barnes to Jackson, but the latter, in trying for a double play, heaved past Kelly, Genewich scoring and Welsh racing to third. Brown beat out a hit to Lindstrom, Welsh scoring. The Giants scored twice in the sixth. Lindstrom beat out a hit to Bancroft and went to third on Meusel's double to left. The runners held their bases as High retired Kelly. [Travis Jackson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jackstr01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) singled to left, Lindstrom and Meusel counting. The Giants inserted another run in the seventh. After Welsh had made a marvelous catch of Mueller's short fly, [Frankie Frisch](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/friscfr01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) and Young singled, sending Frankie to third. Lindstrom forced Young, Gautreau to Bancroft, and Frisch trotted home. ### Tribe Ties, Then Loses In the ninth "Zack" Taylor walked and Johnny Cooney ran for him. Cooney stole second, took third unmolested and scored as Gibson grounded out to Kelly. Gautreau bounced a single through the box and was forced by Wilson, Frisch to Jackson. Welsh singled to right, sending Wilson to third, from where he scored the tying run on Young's wild throw past third. The Braves took a temporary one-run lead in the 13th when High got a life on a fumble by Jackson and went to second on Burrus' single to left. Bancroft singled to left, High counting and Burrus stopping at second. It was here that Bancroft's strategy failed to work. Burrus tried to steal third while Scott held the ball, but Jack threw to Lindstrom and Burrus was nailed. [George Mogridge](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mogrige01.shtml?ref=diamondghosts.com) sacrificed, Scott to Kelly, but Gibson tapped weakly to Jackson and was thrown out. As already told, Lindstrom hit to center field for a home run in the last half of the inning and put the rivals on even terms once more. Warren Cote, former star shortstop of Holy Cross College, who was signed by the Giants last week, was today released to the Toledo club of the American Association.
