Rice Has Only One Weakness---Bunting
Yet He Solved Slim Harriss' Jinx With Perfect Bunt—Star Griff Outfielder Among League's Best Hitters
By GENE KESSLER
"If Sam Rice could only bunt, he'd hit .400 and lead the league."
That was Nick Altrock, demon baseball clown, yet a wise coach, speaking. Nick was greatly responsible for Rice's switch from a good pitcher to a star outfielder.
From this statement one gathers that the art of bunting is very valuable to major league batters. Rice last season led the Griffs at bat with an average of .350.
On one occasion which I remember very distinctly and which must be fresh in the minds of some 20,000 fans present, Rice gave a masterful exhibition of bunting. He laid down a backspinner which crawled along the third base line and so rattled the skinny Bryan Harriss that he immediately lost his jinx over the Nationals.
Yet Sammy isn't regarded as a sure-fire bunter, as Nick implied in his statement. At that, he may make up for some of the points he loses on chances to bunt by sending out sacrifice flies, since any fly ball which advances a runner this year is scored a sacrifice.
